Padstow celebrates May Day with the return of its famous Obby Oss festival for 2024, making it one of the oldest surviving festivals in the UK. The event, marking the beginning of Spring, occurs on the 1st of May, or on the 2nd if the 1st falls on a Sunday.
While the exact origins of the tradition remain a mystery, it is believed to have connections to the ancient Celtic festival of Beltane. The festivities kick off at 10:00 am with the appearance of the ‘Blue Oss’, followed by the ‘Old Oss’ (Red Oss) at 11:00 am.
For centuries, Padstonians have participated in this custom, which involves the two Osses parading through the town’s streets accompanied by music, dancing, and playful teasing of the Oss. It is a cherished tradition that brings the community together in a lively and colorful celebration.
As May Day approaches, Padstow prepares to embrace its cultural heritage and showcase this unique and time-honored festival for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.
