Four Roses Child Care Reopens After Hurricane Milton Devastation in Dade City, Florida
DADE CITY, Fla.— Nearly one year post-Hurricane Milton’s destructive passage through Florida’s Gulf Coast, Four Roses Child Care has triumphantly reopened its doors, marking a hopeful new chapter for the local community. Owner Rosa Reyes credits the collective support from volunteers, friends, and committed community members for aiding her in revitalizing the childcare center she founded just four years ago.
Hurricane Milton left a trail of destruction across the region, with Four Roses Child Care being among the many businesses that faced significant damage. At the time of the hurricane, Reyes was in Puerto Rico, unaware of the impending devastation waiting for her upon her return. Those who witnessed the aftermath hesitated to convey the full extent of the destruction. “When I came back from Puerto Rico and I saw everything, I started crying,” Reyes recounted. The damage was staggering: gaping holes in ceilings, mud-stained floors, and walls compromised by excessive moisture. The extent of the destruction amounted to thousands of dollars, leading to an unavoidable closure of her business.
The disruption not only affected Reyes, but it also forced the parents of her childcare students to seek alternative arrangements. “I had to lay off my staff, and the parents had to find other daycares,” she explained, reflecting on the painful decisions she was compelled to make.
With unwavering determination, Reyes embarked on a journey to rebuild both her life and her business. Initial support came from her insurance provider, followed by a loan from the state’s Small Business Administration (SBA). The challenge of financing repairs was daunting, but she managed to enlist a construction company willing to accept payments contingent upon insurance reimbursement.
Reyes also benefitted from the Glazer Family Small Business Fund, receiving a pivotal grant of ,000 that facilitated essential repairs, rent, insurance, and staff wages. This support streamlined her recovery efforts significantly, emphasizing the importance of community-driven initiatives in sustaining local businesses after natural disasters.
Before the hurricane, Four Roses Child Care proudly served 60 children. Currently, the center has 21 enrolled, but Reyes remains optimistic about increasing that number as the school year approaches. Her resolve to provide quality care and education remains steadfast, positioning Four Roses Child Care not only as a childcare center but as a beacon of resilience in the community.
