Title: The Struggles of Single Parenthood Amid Rising Costs and Critical Health Needs

As a single mother of three, I confront the daily challenges of parenting while grappling with escalating living expenses. Despite my unwavering love for my children and a commitment to their well-being, the financial strain of raising a family has become increasingly overwhelming. This struggle is exacerbated by my experience of being laid off twice within the past year, which has greatly affected our financial stability.

My children are acutely aware of the stress permeating our household, and it has taken a toll on their emotional well-being. Recently, one of my children faced a significant emotional crisis, necessitating placement in a behavioral health unit for intensive care. While this critical intervention has been invaluable, the associated costs have raised concerns about our plan moving forward. My family is currently receiving counseling services, primarily supported by Medicaid funding. If this support were to diminish, we would face potentially insurmountable out-of-pocket expenses, jeopardizing the mental health recovery process.

In an effort to stabilize our situation, I have sought additional assistance, which includes reapplying for food stamps. The extra 0 per month has been beneficial, but overall, my budget remains tightly constrained. The potential loss of SNAP benefits looms large, threatening not only my family but many others in similar circumstances.

Professionally, I have been facilitating training programs for blue-collar workers, a sector that typically sees a slowdown during the summer months. This seasonality complicates our financial landscape, making it difficult to cover essential expenses on a single income.

The broader context of this personal narrative reflects a pressing issue within Louisiana, where Medicaid programs such as LaCHIP provide coverage for 56.8% of children and nearly two-thirds of all births. SNAP supports approximately 867,000 residents, with nearly half of recipients being children. These programs are critical for the survival and health of families like mine, and any attempts to reduce their funding would result in dire consequences.

Earlier this year, I joined hundreds of families in advocating for the protection of these essential programs during the Strolling Thunder rally in Washington, D.C. During our visit to Capitol Hill, we spoke with lawmakers about the importance of Medicaid and SNAP funding in sustaining families like ours. Despite these efforts, the passage of the recent “One Big Beautiful Bill” threatens to cut significant funding for such programs, which could lead to disastrous outcomes: increased healthcare costs, reduction in covered services, and, ultimately, higher rates of childhood suffering.

Today, my family is on a path of recovery, thanks to the support systems that were available to us when we needed them most. It is imperative that families across America are not forced to choose between basic needs such as healthcare and nutritious food. For families like mine, programs like Medicaid and SNAP aren’t just safety nets; they are lifelines that enable us to aspire for a better future for our children. As we continue to navigate these trying times, my hope is that a collective effort will ensure that vulnerable families receive the help they need and deserve.
