Indiana Landmarks recently announced the sale of the historic Geter Means House in Gary to the Gary East Side Community Development Corp. This mid-century ranch house, built in 1954, was home to Gary entrepreneur Geter Means and his wife, Virginia. The Means brothers founded a successful home-building business in the 1920s, leading to the development of Means Manor, which became a sought-after neighborhood for Gary’s Black middle class.

The Geter Means House was added to the 10 Most Endangered list in 2022 due to neglect and deteriorating conditions. Indiana Landmarks stepped in, investing 0,000 to purchase the house, clear out the debris, improve the grounds, and install a new roof. Now, with the house in the hands of the Gary East Side Community Development Corp., renovations will continue to restore the interior of the property.

Executive Director Marlon Mitchell expressed gratitude for the opportunity to complete the restoration work initiated by Indiana Landmarks. The organization is committed to transforming historic properties and contributing to the development of the Midtown community. Future plans include determining a purpose for the Geter Means House that pays homage to its significant heritage once the rehabilitation is finished.
