Petco Love Expands Support for Pet Cancer Treatment with 0,000 Grant to Cornell University
Petco Love, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their families, has announced a significant new investment of 0,000 toward cancer treatment for dogs and cats over the next two years at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. This contribution is part of an ongoing collaboration that has already established a strong foundation for cancer care and research initiatives in veterinary medicine.
Dr. Cheryl Balkman, the oncology section chief at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, highlighted the impact of such funding, stating, “Cancer in a pet can have a profound effect on a family. This investment from Petco Love allows our clients to pursue treatment for their pets while alleviating financial stress during an already trying time.”
This recent grant follows an earlier commitment from Petco Love, which donated an additional 0,000 to the University of California-Davis (UC-Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine in 2023. The funding at UC-Davis is aimed at enhancing pet cancer care, including early detection methodologies and groundbreaking research in oncology for domestic animals.
Since its inception in 1999, Petco Love has invested nearly 1 million in adoption initiatives and other lifesaving efforts, successfully facilitating the adoption of over seven million pets across North America. Collaborating with Blue Buffalo since 2016, Petco Love has allocated a total of 0,000 to Cornell specifically for pet cancer treatments. This funding has directly benefited over 276 families by providing essential services such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical interventions. The newly allocated 0,000 will contribute to the Petco Love & Blue Buffalo Pet Cancer Treatment Support Fund, designed to assist clients at Cornell who may otherwise struggle to afford the cost of cancer treatments for their pets.
“Too many beloved pets are lost to cancer,” remarked Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our collaborative efforts with Blue Buffalo aim to empower pet parents through education, resources, and hope as they confront this disease.” The partnership has led to the development of the Pet Cancer Awareness initiative since 2010, which has invested over million in cancer research and treatment, benefiting countless animals nationwide.
At UC-Davis, the generous funding has proven invaluable for families seeking treatment options that can often be prohibitively expensive. Dr. Kathrine Skorupski, professor of clinical medical oncology at UC Davis, noted, “These funds significantly ease the burden on clients who wish to pursue necessary treatments for their pets’ cancer. Our commitment is to ensure that all clients, regardless of their financial situation, receive the best possible cancer care.”
The Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials at UC-Davis is actively engaged in more than 50 research studies at any given time, many of which focus specifically on cancer treatment for companion animals. These studies seek to develop innovative and effective therapeutic options aimed at improving health outcomes for pets confronting cancer.
In summary, through vital partnerships and dedicated funding, Petco Love is enabling institutions like Cornell and UC-Davis to advance veterinary oncology, reduce financial barriers for pet owners, and ultimately enhance the quality of care for pets battling cancer.
