Roblox Enhances Age Verification and Chat Safety Features

Roblox, a leading online gaming platform renowned for its user-generated content and diverse gaming experiences, is taking significant steps to bolster user safety through improved age verification measures. This initiative is primarily aimed at protecting younger users, amidst growing scrutiny of online interactions and child safety.

In an effort to enhance these safety protocols, Roblox has partnered with Persona, a company specializing in identity verification technology. The new age estimation tool requires users to submit a video selfie, which is processed to provide an age estimate. Importantly, Roblox assures users that these video submissions are deleted after processing, thus addressing potential privacy concerns associated with such data collection. This new requirement specifically targets users who wish to utilize the platform’s chat features, as children under the age of 13 are restricted from chatting with others outside of gameplay unless parental consent is granted.

Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, emphasized the reliability of this technology, asserting that it can accurately estimate a user’s age within a two-year margin for individuals aged between five to 25. Should the age estimation fall outside the typical parameters, users have the option to provide a government-issued ID or obtain parental consent to amend their age designation. Once verified, users will be classified into distinct age groups: under nine, nine to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and over 21. This segmentation is designed to facilitate safer interactions by allowing users to communicate within their respective age categories or with peers in similar age brackets.

The implementation of these age verification measures will commence in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in early December, with a global rollout expected in early January. This move is part of a broader trend among technology companies to enhance protections for minors in digital spaces. Similar initiatives have been undertaken by major platforms such as Google and Instagram, reflecting a heightened awareness of the necessity for stringent age verification systems amid increasing regulatory pressure and societal concerns regarding child safety online.

As Roblox continues to evolve, its proactive approach to user safety highlights the platform’s commitment to creating a safer online environment for its predominantly young audience. By integrating advanced age verification technologies, Roblox aims to reassure parents and guardians while fostering responsible digital interactions.
