JCC Metrowest to Showcase ‘Suffs Jr.’, A Musical Tribute to the Suffragist Movement

The JCC Metrowest is set to host a captivating performance of “Suffs Jr.,” a musical inspired by the American women’s suffrage movement. This event, featuring young performers aged 6 to 18, will run until December 21. Fresh from its successful Broadway run, the musical reinterprets the historical events leading up to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote.

“Suffs,” the original version, boasts a score and book by Shaina Taub, who not only penned and produced the Broadway edition but also starred in it. The adaptation for younger actors, known as “Suffs Jr.,” was developed by the creative team at iTheatrics in collaboration with Taub. This version aims to maintain the integrity of the story while making it accessible and engaging for younger performers.

Director of the production, Maron, expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation, highlighting its complexity compared to other junior titles. She noted that the challenges presented in “Suffs Jr.” serve to motivate the young actors, who appreciate the depth of the material. “This is a more complex junior title than others in the catalogue, but I think it is because it is challenging that the kids are so motivated to rise to that challenge,” Maron stated. “They appreciate the complexity and understand the importance of what they’ve been tasked with, and it’s been a joy to see them reach new heights.”

The suffrage movement, a cornerstone of American history, aimed at ensuring equal rights for women, particularly regarding voting rights. The musical delves into the struggles and triumphs of the suffragists, allowing young performers to engage with this pivotal moment in history through a creative lens. By learning the significance of their roles, the participants embody the very spirit of empowerment that defined the suffragist movement.

“Suffs Jr.” not only entertains but educates its audience about the historical context of women’s rights in the United States. The production also fosters personal growth and developmental skills in its young cast, showcasing their talent in a professional environment.

As the performances progress at the JCC Metrowest, the impact of “Suffs Jr.” promises to resonate beyond the stage, inspiring both performers and audience members alike to reflect on the ongoing journey for equality and justice in society today.
