Taiwanese Production Company Aview Images Joins Indonesian Drama “Our Son” as Co-Producer
Taiwan-based Aview Images has formed a strategic partnership with Indonesian drama “Our Son,” bringing significant post-production expertise to the project. Under the direction of acclaimed filmmaker Luhki Herwanayogi, Aview Images will oversee vital components of the film’s production in Taiwan, including sound design, music composition, color grading, and visual effects.
The film recently completed its principal photography in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and is poised to make its international festival premiere in the upcoming summer months. The collaboration marks a progressive step in cross-cultural film partnerships, following Aview’s notable involvement in “Tale of The Land,” which was the first-ever co-production between Indonesia and Taiwan, in collaboration with KawanKawan Media.
“Our Son,” produced by Indonesia’s Catchlight Pictures and Qun Films, navigates complex familial themes. It tells the poignant story of two childless couples thrust into parenthood after discovering that a child is the result of an affair between their respective families. The film delves into the nuanced dynamics of family relationships, presenting a narrative that is both personal and universally relatable.
Filmmaker Luhki Herwanayogi, who received the prestigious 2021 Locarno Open Doors Award, indicated that “Our Son” is a reflection of his lived experiences in Yogyakarta. He stated, “The film raises a fundamental question: What truly defines a family?” This thematic exploration is underscored by the film’s collaboration with a highly skilled Indonesian crew, complemented by contributions from Singaporean director of photography, James Hia.
The talented cast brings depth to the story, with Raihaanun, known for her role in “Gowok, Javanese Kamasutra,” leading the ensemble. Other noteworthy actors include Della Dartyan, Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin, Ariyo Wahab, and promising child actor Farrell Rafisqy. Raihaanun expressed her excitement about the film, stating, “It has been far too long since we’ve seen a complex storyline in Indonesian cinema.”
The path to bringing “Our Son” to fruition has involved extensive development, engaging in multiple international script labs since 2019, including prestigious programs such as the Busan Asian Film School and the Jogja Future Project. It garnered accolades, such as the Award for Script Development Grant from the Open Doors Development Program at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, and was selected for the Ties That Bind initiative before participating in the JFW Producers Lab during the Jakarta Film Week in 2024.
Giovanni Rahmadeva, producer at Qun Films, remarked on the film’s broad appeal, asserting that the story “will resonate with audiences not only in Indonesia but also worldwide by offering a fresh, emotionally charged exploration of family and identity.” Following its anticipated festival debut, “Our Son” is slated for a commercial release in Indonesian cinemas, aiming to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of Indonesian cinema.
