Verbena Schools Host Successful Food Drive in Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry
In a spirited display of community engagement and school pride, Verbena Elementary and High Schools recently organized a food drive themed around the age-old rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn University. The initiative, which culminated in the collection of a significant total of 450 pounds of food, showcased the students’ commitment to social responsibility while channeling their school spirit.
The food drive, designed to benefit the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center, proved to be not only a competitive effort between the two schools but also a vital contribution to local individuals and families in need. Al Headley, a representative from the assistance center, expressed gratitude for the donations: “This will go a long way in helping feed those in need,” he stated, highlighting the importance of community support in tackling food insecurity.
Over the course of the drive, the two schools engaged in a friendly competition, challenging students to bring in as many non-perishable food items as possible. Ultimately, the drive concluded with Alabama securing the victory by collecting 266 cans, surpassing Auburn’s contribution of 208 cans. Debbie Stanford served as the coordinator for the elementary school, while Gehrig Douglas took on the role for the high school.
