Rebecca Bowen, who will earn a Bachelor of General Studies, expressed her excitement about sharing this milestone with her daughter, who will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design. “It just kind of worked out that Rachael and I get to graduate together, and even from the same college. We hoped it might happen, but we weren’t for sure,” she remarked. Having faced numerous challenges along their respective educational journeys, the opportunity to graduate side by side adds an emotional significance to the occasion.
The ceremony will take place within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at 9 a.m. on that day. For both women, this moment marks the culmination of their hard work and commitment. Rebecca conveyed her mixed feelings of joy and sentimentality, stating, “I think I’ve got the better of it because not only am I fulfilling this for myself, but I also get to watch my kid graduate.”
Despite the shared joy of graduation, the two women have followed different educational paths. Rachael, originally a nursing student, completed her education predominantly through in-person classes over six years, while Rebecca returned to college after a long hiatus and completed her coursework online. Interestingly, they managed to enroll in a single class together—architectural history—an experience that deepened their bond. “I love telling people that my mom is a student at UCA. It was kind of funny with the roles reversed,” Rachael shared. Meanwhile, Rebecca humorously noted that her daughter’s insights were instrumental in her success in the class.
The pursuit of higher education carries deep personal meaning for the Bowen family. Rebecca comes from a lineage valuing education; her father was a professor, and her mother served as an elementary librarian. Tragically, both parents passed away before she could fulfill her academic aspirations. In a heartfelt gesture, Rebecca plans to wear her father’s tassel at the commencement ceremony, honoring their legacy while celebrating her own achievements.

Following the ceremony, Rebecca will return to her job in Little Rock, while Rachael is set to embark on her career with Shine Interior Design Studio.
