Cambodia Welcomes Record Number of Tourists During Traditional New Year Celebration
Cambodia saw a staggering influx of nearly 22 million tourists, both domestic and international, during the four-day traditional New Year holiday from April 13 to 16. This number included 21.7 million national tourists and local residents, as well as around 110,000 foreign visitors.
Leading the pack in tourist arrivals was Kampong Cham province, which welcomed over 5.3 million visitors, followed by Prey Veng province with close to 2.3 million visitors.
Top Sopheak, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism, expressed surprise at the unprecedented number of tourists during the New Year Festival, noting that it exceeded expectations and even surpassed pre-Covid-19 figures. He credited the high turnout to the various celebratory events and entertainment programs held across the country.
The surge in domestic tourism during the holiday period had a significant positive impact on the economy, benefiting local communities and businesses. Last year, Cambodia recorded over 13 million local and foreign visitors during the three-day traditional New Year holiday.
Overall, the record number of tourists during this year’s New Year celebration showcases Cambodia’s continued appeal as a top tourist destination and highlights the resilience of the tourism industry in the face of challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic.
