Milwaukee Film Takes Over Historic Downer Theatre

Milwaukee, WI – In a move that will delight local movie enthusiasts, Milwaukee Film has officially announced that it will be taking over operations of the beloved Downer Theatre starting with the 2024 Milwaukee Film Festival on April 12. The theater will resume regular operations on April 26, much to the joy of the community.

The Downer Theatre, a cherished landmark in Milwaukee’s Upper Eastside neighborhood, closed its doors in September 2023, leaving a void in the hearts of moviegoers. However, thanks to Milwaukee Film stepping in, the iconic theater will once again be a hub for cinematic experiences and cultural events.

Anne Reed, Milwaukee Film’s Interim CEO, expressed her gratitude to the dedicated supporters who made this transition possible, emphasizing the importance of preserving historic cinemas for future generations to enjoy.

The 2024 Milwaukee Film Festival, presented by Associated Bank, will showcase a diverse lineup of local, national, and international films at four locations across Milwaukee from April 11-25. In addition to the Downer Theatre, screenings will take place at Milwaukee Film’s Oriental Theatre, as well as the Avalon Theater and the Times Cinema.

Cara Ogburn, Artistic Director at Milwaukee Film, highlighted the significance of the Downer Theatre’s reopening, noting that it will allow the organization to better serve the community with high-quality films year-round.
